History of CASA VÉLO
In Turin, Casa Vélo corresponds to the historic Palazzo Grondana, also known as Palazzo d’Harcourt, a 17th-century building overlooking Via XX Settembre. Today it is a luxury residential complex that combines history with contemporary technology, hosting private residences and a boutique hotel.
From the seventeenth century to the contemporary city
The palace was built in the mid-17th century as a noble residence and soon became a focal point of city life, thanks to the presence of the Count d’Harcourt and the families who lived in its grand salons. Over the following decades the building changed purpose several times: at the end of the 19th century it housed a hotel, then a coffee-roasting facility, before becoming – in the 20th century – one of Turin’s symbols of innovation.
From 1927 to 2006 it served as the headquarters of Italgas and became widely known as the “Palace of Gas”. During these years the building was associated with industrial progress and the city’s energy services, while still preserving its historic structure and many original architectural features.
During the Second World War, an air-raid bunker was built in the cellars of the palace: here, in a time of great hardship for the city, two bicycles mounted in tandem powered a dynamo that provided light and ventilation, allowing those sheltering there to breathe and see even during the bombardments.
The name “Casa Vélo”
When, after years of inactivity, the palace was recovered and restored by Gruppo Primula Costruzioni, the choice of name was no coincidence: Casa Vélo pays tribute to the very bicycles which, in the underground bunker, converted human energy into light and air, offering protection in the most critical moments of the city’s history.
Rebirth and restoration
The restoration has breathed new life into the complex, combining historic elements with contemporary architecture: façades and shared areas have been enhanced, while the interiors have been redesigned to accommodate prestigious residences, representative spaces and high-end hospitality functions.
Casa Vélo today
Today Casa Vélo offers modern, customisable apartments equipped with advanced technologies such as geothermal systems and sophisticated thermal and acoustic insulation solutions. The complex includes internal green areas, an agora covered by a glass dome that serves as a meeting and reception space, and concierge services designed for discreet, comfortable everyday living.
The palace is also home to a boutique hotel that preserves the historic elegance of the building, making Casa Vélo an icon of luxury and memory in the heart of Turin: a place where the city’s history dialogues with contemporary design and a thoroughly modern way of living.
